Press the ON LINE switch.5 The ON LINE indicator lights and the printer is ready for printing.Cautionsz Do not open the paper cover while printing.z Use only paper that satisfies the paper specifications, and make sure that the paper is not curled, wrinkled, etc.z The paper will curl and may not stack properly if it catches at the top of the paper cover when being fed into the printer( as shown in the illustration).

If this occurs, slightly tap the paper with your hand so that it stack properly against the cover. ChapterPrinter4SettingsChanging the Printer SettingsThere are 3 ways to change the printer’s settings: from the control panel, from your software, and from the DIP switches.

Changes made using the first two methods are lost when the printer is turned off; changed made from the DIP switches persist even after the printer is turned off. From the Control PanelUse the control panel to make changes if you want the changed to be effective for the current printing session only. When the printer is turned off, all the changed are lost.NoteThese changes may also be affected by your software. In some instances the software will over-ride the control panel settings. The following changes can be made, depending on whether the printer is online or offline.OnlineOfflineEmulation (page 67)Font (page 73)Quality/speed (page 66)Pitch (page 70)Style (page 71)From Your See setting up your software for the BJ-20 on page 31 also refer to Chapter 5 Software Printer Control codes and Appendix A: Printer Control Codes Summary. From the DIP Use the DIP switches to make changes if you want the changes to be Switches permanent until modified again. You can put the printer into high speed (110 cps), lower quality mode.SelectingHigh 1 Make sure the printer is online.SpeedPress the LF/FF and FWD ADJ switches simultaneously to light the HIGH 2 SPEED indicator.Selecting High1 Make sure the printer is online.QualityPress the LF/FF and FWD ADJ switches simultaneously until the 2 HIGH SPEED indicator goes off.NoteWhen the printer is running at high speed less ink is used, thus extending the BJ cartridge life.

Selecting Printer EmulationThe BJ-20 allows you to emulate three types of printers: the Epson LQ510, the IBM Proprinter X24E, and the Canon BJ-l 30e printers. They are further grouped under two modes: the LQ mode and the BJ-lOe mode, as shown in the table below. Z Whenever you use the control panel to change printer emulation, all current printer setting changes made from the control panel (such as font and character pitch) are lost; theBJ-20 refers to the DIP switches to form printer settings for the new emulation.z The eight DIP switches (1, 5-11) are assigned different functions in different printer modes (page 63). Therefore, physically changing a DIP switch position in a mode will affect the function assigned to this switch in the other mode if the printer emulation is changed with the control panel. For example in BJ-10e mode DIP SW 10 is used to set the buffer size, while in LQ mode this is used for font selection. The change is not lost when the printer is turned off.1 Make sure the printer is turned off.Use a ball point pen (or similar object) to change the DIP switch 2 12.

When the DIP switch 12 set to OFF, the BJ-10e mode isselected. If the DIP switch 11 is ON, the printer emulates the Canon BJ130e printer, otherwise it emulates the IBM Proprinter X24E printer. When the DIP switch 12 set to ON, the LQ mode is selected. SelectingBy selecting the appropriate national character set, you can print in aNationaldifferent language. The set is selected using a combination of the DIPCharacter Setswitches. Press the LF/FF switch to select the print style. The buzzer sounds a shorter beep, indicating the change is made.Press the ON LINE switch to exit the setting mode. The printer becomes online.Notesz 'Printer reset' sets the print style to factory default (i.e. No print style).z The buzzer gives a beep for each step you make and sounds 2 times when you are back to 'Current Setting'.z To combine several print styles, e.g.

'Emphasized' and'Double-wide', just use the PITCH switch to move to the desired style, and use the LF/FF switch to select it.To de-select a style:Press the ON LINE and PITCH switches simultaneously. The buzzer sounds 3 times and the printer enters the print style setting mode.Press the PITCH switch the required number of times to move to the desired style.Press the LF/FF switch to dc-select the print style.

The buzzer sounds a long beep, indicating the change is made.Press the ON LINE switch to exit the setting mode. The printer becomes online. Prestige, Script, Orator, and Orator-S.To select a font for current printing session only1 Make sure that the LQ indicator lights and the ON LINE indicator is off.2 Press the FONT switch. Chapter 6 Maintenance Recharging the Battery PackWhen fully charged, the optional NiCd rechargeable battery pack can operate up to 40 Minutes. To maintain optimum performance, the battery pack should always be completely exhausted (see next page), before any recharging is done. Otherwise, the battery life will become shorter.1 To Recharge it, make sure the battery pack is switched on.2 Turn off the Printer. While holding down the ON LINE switch, turn on the printer.3 The POWER indicator starts flashing, indicating the battery pack is being recharged. 4When the battery pack is fully charged, the POWER indicator goes off,and the printer turns off automatically.

Recharge takes about 4 hoursor less.5Leave the battery pack switched on.When the battery pack is switched on and the printer connected to anAC outlet, the printer will automatically use the AC power. To use thebattery, simply disconnect the AC adapter. If battery life becomes shorterWhen you always recharge the NiCd battery pack before it is completelyexhausted (i.e. Before the low battery warning is reached, page 105),after this is done several times, the battery capacity is reduced to thelevel you always use, causing the battery pack to operator for a shortertime (and to output fewer number of prints per charge.)A full recharge can typically deliver about 40 prints of A4-size paper. Ifyou can print only up to about 30 prints/A4 or so, the problem hasprobably occurred.

To remedy, fully charge the battery pack. Then try toprint - as much as your printing situation allows - in HQ mode until thelow battery alarm warning is reached. Finally, recharge the battery packto restore the maximum capacity.Cautionsz Do not overcharge the battery pack.z Do not disassemble the battery pack.z Do not dispose of the battery pack in fire. It may explode.z Keep foreign objects out of the battery compartment. They can damage the battery and the printer.z Do not touch the terminals of the battery pack.z If the battery pack is not used, switch if off.z When the pack is being charged, the printer cannot print.z Follow local regulations when disposing of a used NiCd battery pack.

3Remove the BJ Cartridge.CautionAvoid touching the electrode on the mounting base.4Prepare a new BJ cartridge and follow the installation proceduredescribed in the 'Installing the BJ Cartridge' Section on page 15.Cautionsz When discarding a used BJ cartridge, place it in a vinyl bag to avoid the possibility of ink spilling out.z The print head is a special precision component, so do not touch it.z Do not subject the BJ cartridge to physical shock or vibration. Doing so might cuase the ink to spill out on your hands or clothes. Cleaning the Print HeadThe printer’s unique head cleaning system periodically (automatically) clears away paper particles and accumulated dust that might otherwise cause printing problems. The cleaning system also clears the nozzles and helps maintain a high level of print quality. However, if streaking or printing gaps appear in the output, clean the print head. For details, see the 'Cleaning the Print Head' Section in Chapter 2 Getting Started.

Cleaning the Printer CabinetClean the printer regularly to avoid print problem.Make sure the printer is off and the AC adapter disconnected. Use a soft, moistened cloth to remove any ink mist or paper debris from the inside of the printer. Cautionsz Make sure the printer is turned off before cleaning it.z Do not clean the printer body with volatile liquids like thinner or benzine. Doing so will damage the surface of the printer.z When cleaning the printer, avoid the area near the print head on the BJ cartridge.

Do not touch the print head. Storing and Transporting the PrinterIf you need to ship the printer or store if for over one month, take thefollowing steps.1Turn off the printer. The print head is recapped automatically. Chapter Troubleshooting 7 Errors Displayed Via IndicatorsIf any printer problem occurs, first look at the indicators on the control panel and see if the chart below can help. If that is not successful, then try the 'Errors Not Displayed Via Any Indicator' section. If the problem still persists, jot down the symptoms and any additional information, then contact your local Canon dealer for assistance.Diagnosis ChartPOWER ONLINE ERRORANALYSIS/REMEDYOFFOFFOFFThe AC adapter is improperly connected or the powerswitch is turned off.ONOFFON(The buzzer sounds 2 times in BJ-lOe mode, or 3 times inLQ mode.)The printer is out of paper.Load new paper and press the ON LINE switch to resumeprinting.ONOFFON(The buzzer sounds continuously.) If printing of the page is not finished yet, you can either:z Connect the printer to an AC outlet. Then press the ON LINE switch to resume printing.z If AC outlet is not available, you can use the remaining battery power for limited printing. Pressing the ON LINE switch each time prints several lines, until the battery pack is totally exhausted; then a low battery error is issued.Low Battery ErrorWhen the battery pack is totally exhausted, a low battery error is issued (See the 'Diagnosis chart' section). Recharging is required before it can operate again. If you have work still in printing, the only way to continue is to plug the printer into an AC outlet.CautionReplacing the battery pack at the middle of printing will result in loss of all data still remaining in the printer buffer.
